chapter 14

When I woke up I was in a familiar place but yet not familiar at all. I was in a hospital room again. Looking all around me I saw pictures on the wall and on the bedside table. They looked familiar. I picked up one. It was of me holding two beautiful babies. That can’t be right. I put it down and picked up another photo. Again I saw myself. Not now, I look somehow older and there is a man holding me in the photo. The same one I saw in my dreams, the one I first remembered seeing the last time I was in the hospital. I was looking at the photo so intently, I didn’t realize someone came into the room until I heard a crash. It was Devon, he dropped whatever it was he was holding and came running over.

“Kara, you’re awake.”

“Yes,” I said. “Where is my husband?”

“I’m here Kara.”

“No,” I screamed. “Connor is my husband, I want him now and I want to know what is going on.” Devon reached over and hit the call bell on the side of the bed. A nurse walked in.

“I see she’s awake.”

“I need to speak to the doctor,” Devon said, “right away.”

“I’ll page him immediately,” she said, and left the room.

“Why are you looking at me like that?” I asked.

“You really don’t remember anything, do you, Kara?”

I just ignored him. He looked so sad. A few minutes later a doctor walked in.

“Well, well,” he said, “I see you are finally awake.”

“Who are you and where is my husband?” I asked. The doctor shared a glance with the other man. “Devon, Mrs. Carrington,” the doctor addressed us.

“I am not Mrs. Carrington, I am Mrs. Cobey, Mrs. Connor Cobey and I want to know what’s going on.”

“Now, Kara, my name is Dr. Kyle. I’ve been taking care of you for the last three and one-half months, since you were brought in right from the car accident.”

“Nothing you’re saying is making any sense,” I replied, “what accident?” “Is Connor alright? Where is he? I want to see him now, do you understand me! Stop looking at me like I’m some crazy person.”

“Kara, you need to calm down.”

“No I’m leaving; I will find my husband myself.”

I heard an alarm go off and then a few nurses were entering the room. The doctor ordered a sedative.

“You will not touch me, do you understand? Get away from me. You can’t do this,” I started crying hysterically because they were holding me down and wouldn’t let me leave. I screamed as the doctor injected me with a needle.

“I don’t understand, Dr. Kyle,” Devon said.

“Sometimes when you have a head injury as in Kara’s case and have been in a coma for this length of time, it’s hard to tell what effect it’s had on the brain. We just don’t know how she is going to be or exactly the amount of damage there is, until she wakes up fully, and now that she has woken up, the prognosis, I’m afraid doesn’t look good, but we will have to see.
